The writings of Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange represent
the work of a greatly admired and much beloved Christian Science
practitioner, teacher and lecturer. Dr. de Lange felt profoundly
the monumental nature of the contribution made to the world and
mankind by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary
Baker Eddy, whose life and work he revered and cherished. A
thorough and devoted student of the Bible, Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures, and Mrs. Eddy’s other works, Dr.
de Lange knew that hers was the full and final revelation, his
every statement supported, on all points, by passages from her
writings.
Dr. de Lange’s life purpose was to state the
fundamental truths of Christian Science in all their simplicity
and grandeur, their might and majesty, their infinitude and
limitless possibilities. And, in accordance with Mrs. Eddy’s
statement on page 332 of Science and Health, that “the
Christ is incorporeal, spiritual, – yea the divine image and
likeness, . . .” understood and taught that Christian Science
has revealed the fullness of the Christ, the very essence of
Being, and its all-encompassing, irresistible, universal nature
and healing power.
A native of the Netherlands, Dr. de Lange was
educated at the University of Leyden, where he studied law,
receiving his doctoral degree in 1921. Scholarly works of his
appeared in the following years, and from 1923 to 1929 he was a
correspondent in The Hague for the Christian Science Monitor.
It was after this period that he was appointed to the Christian
Science Board of Lectureship, serving in that capacity for 22
years. With the ability to speak several languages, the
invitations for him to lecture were world-wide.
Dr. de Lange had Primary Class with Bicknell
Young (with whom he subsequently remained close friends), and Normal Class with George Shaw Cook, a student of
Edward A. Kimball. He became a resident and citizen of the
United States, and was named a teacher of Christian Science in
1935. His frequent contributions to the Christian Science
periodicals, thirty-two articles in all, spoke eloquently of the
Science of the Christ, and were always enthusiastically
received.
It was Dr. de Lange’s consistency and reverence
for Mrs. Eddy’s revelation that attracted students, lecture
audiences, and readers alike, in addition to his deeply held
conviction that Christian Science is to be lived; that
the substance and attraction of the teaching came not from
person, but from Truth itself, the healing and redeeming
Christ-power, that was fully available to everyone, without
exception.
