John Hargreaves, C.S.

John Hargreaves' cultural background was that of Christian Science, though a wide experience in the course of his various careers has made this background more of a lens through which life is seen than an organization to which one adheres.

John, a British citizen, was born in South Africa and educated in England at Eton. He joined the British Army in World War II, and served as one of the youngest commissioned officers in the Rifle Brigade in Northwest Europe and, later, in Kenya during the Mau Mau troubles. His military service included periods with Intelligence. He retired from the Army in 1956 and joined IBM United Kingdom, serving on its board of directors.  For many years he was a leader in public and community affairs and helped to develop many national and international educational and community organizations.

In 1976 he retired from IBM and resigned from a number of other directorships, as well as political, educational, and voluntary appointments, to give his full time to the practice of Christian Science. He was first listed as a practitioner in the Christian Science Journal in 1979 and maintained a worldwide practice. Over the years John contributed many articles to the Christian Science periodicals and also served on the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. He was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in London, where he served as First Reader.

No subject, however, engaged his devoted scholarship and enthusiasm as did Christian Science and the Science of Being. John pored over and absorbed all of Mary Baker Eddy’s writings and thus was able to bring to every discussion an entirely faithful and complete understanding of her discovery. While he greatly enjoyed sharing views with scholars, experts and leaders around the world on wide-ranging topics related to spirituality, he was always alert to correct misstatements or distortions wrongly attributed to Mrs. Eddy.

Throughout his experience, he traveled and lectured in many parts of the world.  He gave many Association Addresses which were widely distributed by attendees and which have subsequently been published by Mulberry Press.

Writings by John Hargreaves

In 1993, Mulberry Press published a book by John called The Christian Science Revolution in Thought . This was very well received and many people asked him to write another book that would be of interest to those who were unbiased searchers for a new answer in this scientific age, and who might or might not be aligned with any faith or organization.

This second book, As ‘I’ See It, was published in 1995 and by 2001, it was sold out, disappointing many who have been seeking copies ever since.  Mulberry Press has recently arranged for a new printing and soft cover copies of the book are now available again from the Mulberry Press website.

His third book, They Shall Be All Taught of God, published in 1998, is in the nature of a commentary on the "Recapitulation" chapter of the textbook by Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health.  John's book can only be read in conjunction with Science and Health. His book was developed from the many talks with those with whom John had contact.  In the course of these talks, John suggested pointers that might help individual study in conjunction with "Recapitulation" to further their own growth in the understanding of the Science of being.

Mulberry Press offers many of John's writings and audio programs that can be purchased on this website.   Please click on "Online Store" to read a description of these books.  Additional writings are being compiled and edited and will be offered in the future.  Mulberry Press is accepting donations to help get many of John's writings back in print.
